Butterfly Beginnings Doula

At Butterfly Beginnings Doula, I am focused on supporting women facing high risk, high stress pregnancies.

Women who have a history of pregnancy loss (stillbirths, miscarriage, infant loss) or perhaps who have navigated a challenging IVF/IUI journey or are working with a surrogate have unique emotional and physical challenges when faced with pregnancy.

As a doula I am here for all supportive measures along the way and hope to help achieve the best birth we can with the circumstances we are given.

About Madeleine Rowat

I came to doula work after my own history with pregnancy loss and navigating the twists and turns of the fertility world. After such a profound experience I decided to leave my corporate career and train in doula work. I was called to help support other women facing complex fertility issues, whether its stillbirth, miscarriages, IVF/IUI, surrogacy or other complex issues.

My first pregnancy ended with a stillbirth of my son where I chose to vaginally deliver. I have also navigated repeated earlier losses, 6+ rounds of IVF and a surrogacy journey! I truly know the fatigue, fears, stress and all that comes into play with pregnancy after these challenges. I myself have found a lot of peace and purpose in my struggles - I believe it was meant to happen to me so I could support other women facing heartache.

We will get through this together - whatever may happen or be - I am there to emotionally and physically care for you throughout the process.

When I am not all things fertility - I spend my time with my husband (Ryan) and our kitties (Winston, Olive) and doodle Max <3

Education

2025

Douglas College

Doula Training Program

An intensive course being trained from industry professional doulas. Learning about birthing techniques to alleviate / manage pain, including the birth partner, navigating medical systems. Evidence based information and code of ethics for doulas. Advocacy for informed consent, birth interventions, hormones in pregnancy, birth and post birth. Stages, phases of labor.

2012-2024

Corporate career girl! Was growing as a manager in the cybersecurity/technology space helping companies recruit professionals. Very rewarding work but in this time is when I began facing my own fertility struggles. Suddenly the corporate career I grew did not have meaning to me anymore. All paths lead to where we are meant to be.

2025 onwards

Ongoing education! Participating in perinatal classes to learn deeper about birthing, teaching parents on the birthing process.

Lactation courses to expand my knowledge.

How do doulas work?

At Butterfly Beginnings Doula, we are committed to offering empathetic support and care to women throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences. Our mission is to create a safe and comforting space where women can receive the care they deserve.

Doula's are not medical professionals. We operate in a unique space between medical professionals and the birthing woman. We are the support structure for your emotional and physical wellbeing along the journey! Pregnancy after loss, IVF, surrogacy or other traumas is hard and as doula's we can be your trusted confidante and helper during this journey.

We do not provide medical advice or prescriptions but we can help find public information for you to review with your care team.

Having a doula can help decrease your chances of pitocin, c section, decreased pain relief medications (if you wish), decrease in the dissatisfaction of your birth experience. It is also my role to help your partner participate, feel empowered and feel helpful during the journey.
